In August of 1998 the 20th Symposium of the International Council for Traditional Music, Study Group on Ethnochoreology was held in the beautiful environs of Boğaziçi Üniversitesi in greater Istanbul. The members of the study group who were able to attend were treated with gracious hospitality by Dr. Arzu Öztürkmen and her capable assistants: Günhan Börekçi and Mehmet Beşikçi from the History department, as well as Berna Kurt and Bedirhan Dehmen from the Folklore Club and Altuğ Yılmaz from the Boğaziçi Gösteri Sanatları Topluluğu (Boğaziçi Performing Arts Ensemble). The daily meetings set aside for the presentations and discussions on various aspects of the cultural study of dance could not have been in a more serene setting than in the university, overlooking its namesake, the Bosphorous. A great debt of thanks is owed the sponsoring institutions of Boğaziçi University: the Rectorate of the Boğaziçi University, the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the History Department. The symposium was prepared in coperation with the Boğaziçi University Folklore Club and the program committee was chaired by Irene Loutzaki (Greece), working in conjunction with Anna Shturbanova (Bulgaria), and Arzu Öztürkmen, the local organizer.
