How To Play KAVAL

Kaval is one of the first instruments that the humans began to play. In Central Asia, the instrument becomes known with the appearance of the Turkish civilizations. The name kaval is drived from the word kav, which means hollow in Turkish. Now-a-days in Turkey, in different regions it is called kaval, hival or düdük. It has two different types. One is the kaval with a beak, and the other one, the kaval without a beak. We are going to learn how to play the kaval without a beak. Kaval which is usually made out of plum tree is lately made out of plum tree. Kaval has seven holes on its front side, and one hole its reverse; so totally it has eight holes. Kaval has a chromatic scale. That means it has semitones between the holes. It has a span of two and a half or three octaves. Kaval has a special place among the Anatolian people. Its touching sound had been used to reflect the feelings of people for centuries. It still is played and listened in all the regions of our country with pleasure.
